Pinus mugo 'Mughus' is a dwarf variety of the mountain pine, prized for its rugged charm, compact size, and neat, bushy shape. It forms a low, rounded mound of dense, dark green needles, growing slowly to about 1–1.5 meters in height and 1.5–2 meters wide over many years.

This variety is extremely hardy, tolerating cold, wind, drought, and poor soils, making it a top choice for difficult planting sites, including:

Rock gardens
Erosion-prone slopes
Alpine or mountain-style gardens
Urban and coastal landscapes

‘Mughus’ maintains its form without pruning, and its stiff, evergreen needles stay attractive year-round. It grows best in full sun with well-drained soil and adapts to both acidic and neutral conditions.

Resistant to pests and diseases, this pine is also deer-resistant and very low-maintenance, making it a reliable choice for naturalistic or formal designs where a sturdy evergreen presence is desired.
